Today, I graduated from Basic Training. I was really looking forward to seeing my family after being away for almost three months. They decided not to come to graduation because they didn't want to spend the money to travel here. They live 30 minutes away. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
We're so proud of you
Today, I found out nobody in my family wants to come to my college graduation. I spent four years and $60,000 to be the first person in my family to go to college, and nobody wants to see me graduate because the four hour ceremony is "too long." FML
Surprise!
Today, I attended my graduation ceremony. My parents acted mysteriously and kept urging me to go home, since we had to be "on time" for something. Thinking they might have planned a surprise party, I left my friends behind. I missed my graduation because my mom wanted to watch a TV show. FML
Favorite child
Today, it was my college graduation ceremony. My parents didn’t come because they “forgot”, although I told them and had been reminding them for months. Last year was my little sister’s high school graduation. My parents wasted no time going to her ceremony and then took her out to dinner. FML
Long distance
Today, I'm in my fourth month of training in the US Navy. I'm 3000 miles from home. I joined to give my wife a better life. Since I've been gone, she decided that she liked being single. FML
Dodgy dad
Today, nobody wanted to come to my graduation after finding out that my father was coming too. FML
Don't know, don't care
Today, my mom told me that on my graduation day, the reason she (and my dad) almost didn't show up was because they had to spend almost an hour convincing my grandma to attend. FML
Not worth our time
Today, my grandparents told me they couldn't make it to my college graduation, even with months in advance to plan, because they had their annual Mother's Day plans with friends. Plans they've had every year, and are further away. This was the only time I'll ever have a graduation ceremony. My grandpa is my last biological grandparent. FML
Today, it was my high school graduation. Everything was going fine until everyone saw my family fighting over where we would go afterwards. Security had to pull them apart. FML
Today, after two weeks of trying to convince my parents to go to my high school graduation. They finally gave in. After they handed me my diploma, they decided to leave because it was "too boring." I'm currently sitting on the curb of the street waiting for my Uber, while people take pictures of me. FML
**** me, right?
Today, I got offered a ride to go home for the weekend. I go to college six hours away from home and haven't seen my family for almost two months. When I called my mom with the good news, she told me not to come. FML

Well, that's their loss. They'll regret it eventually, not that it helps now. You're doing a great thing and you deserve their respect.

That is unfortunate. I feel for you. My family is the same way. I had to have an emergency surgery on my left ovary 2 yrs ago My mom lived precisely 39 miles away from the hospital. Her excuse was that she had plans to go out bar hopping with some friends, and if she came to the hospital, she might loose her chances of getting laid that night. Now, you risking your life for your country (which most people on FML, including myself, appreciate greatly) is much more important and serious of a matter than my own. Although, the hurt of family not being there for you when you need them, and when they should be is a great pain. I am sorry that they did that. You served your country. You deserve to be greeted home by the ones that you love.

The worst part...10:1 says that if you decide to not contact them for the rest of your enlistment, they'll be the ones saying that you're ungrateful. Look at it this way OP, you'll be able to see the world and nothing will hold you back. Put in to the MGI BIll, go to college, and become an officer. Enlistment can suck, I did my 4 in the Corps, but I have hated almost every job since, and I realized it's because as aggravated as I was in the Corps, I miss the discipline and the service. Unfortunately it took me far too long to realize exactly why I missed it. Just stay true to yourself OP, forget those that have forgotten you, and move on. Semper Fi.

Thank you for your service! I am sorry you had no one waiting for you... That's just ridiculous. You deserve better than that for the sacrifice you make for all of us.

No matter what my children turn out to be, I will support them. I will support them if they want to become doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, construction workers... I will love and support them if they end up gay, transexual or anything unusual. However, the moment they decide they want to be soldiers, I will feel as if I failed as a parent. I raise my respect to soldiers who fight and die for their home and the innocent lives, who are forced by their government in one way or another(several countries still have this practise). I can not, and will not support soldiers who voluntarily join the army. I hate war, and I believe every war is pointless, and voluntarily joining the army is the most direct way of supporting war. And this is why, I wouldn't have shown up at your graduation either, if I were your dad, OP. Although I wouldn't have come up with some ridiculous idea like "not wanting to pay for the trip".
