Today, I’m an adult and my mother lives with me, not me with her. She found out I was going to be gone for 9 days on vacation and that she couldn’t come, so she had a “mental break down” and checked herself into a psych ward. Last year, she did the same thing when I graduated college and celebrated it. FML

Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, my mother knocked on the door of my room at 7am. I am currently over 300 miles from home, on a vacation to get away from my overbearing family. I told none of them where I was going. FML
Today, my mom read my diary. Then she frantically booked me an appointment with a psychiatrist. FML
Today, my mom was screaming and throwing things at me and I didn’t know why. Then I checked the date. Her birthday was yesterday. FML
Today, I found out that all of the times my mom told me that she was busy out of town wasn’t due to work, it was that she was going on vacations with her boyfriend and his kids. FML
Today, my mom ambushed me with my cheating ex-fiancé, thinking being in the same room would miraculously change the past and we’d get back together. When I tried to walk out, my mom screamed like a banshee and latched onto my leg. After this I’m putting her in a retirement home and never visiting. FML
Today, after being hospitalized last week due to a severe mental breakdown, my mom is still mad at me for missing her big solo at church. She had even tried to demand I be released from the hospital for it. She's still going on about how she thinks I missed it on purpose. FML
Today, I called my mom to let her know I was coming home for my upcoming birthday, as I haven’t seen my parents in months. She then stated she hated my birthday because it reminded her she was getting older, and they may have preexisting plans that evening anyways. Really feeling the family love… FML
Today, I live with my mother and realized she goes out with her friends and dates more times a week than I do in a single month. FML
Today, I listened to a voicemail from my mom about how she misses me and can't wait to see me when I get back from vacation. Thinking she hung up, my mother then had a conversation with my aunt about how quiet the house is without me and how she'd be blessed if I didn't come home. FML
Today, my mother "borrowed" money from my stash to help pay for her vacation to the Dominican Republic. The same trip I'm not allowed to go on. FML

Are you an only child? I take it she is either divorced or widowed. I think she needs some help for more issues than she is letting on. Taker her mental health seriously. If this is a controlling tactic it needs addressed as much as any other disorder. You could be reported to Adult Protective Services for neglect. Noone wants that. Also, don't neglect YOUR mental health. so, do take a vacation away from her. You need that break. If you have siblings, ship her off to them while you are gone. If not, I don't really know. You are in a hard situation. I feel for you.

If she's perfectly functional in the rest of her life then you really need to move her out. For your own sanity and for the sake of any future relationships, including the one with her. If she's like this in the rest of her life then you need to be talking to your nearest mental health clinic and getting her treatment. Before she decides that the best way to stop you having any sort of life is persistently spiking your coffee with something to keep you home 'sick'...

Okay so I've been in the psych ward. There is absolutely nothing you can or will do beyond making a phone call once a day. The staff will take care of her, and you absolutely should go ahead on your vacation. Tell the staff about her prior visits and what you were doing, then let them do their jobs. She's in exactly the place she needs to be, and you should treat it that way.
