OP's patient is crazy in love.
Student nurse? More like a love doctor. :D
Now you know who to stay away from.... Just give him sleeping pills every time you're working.
You can't just shove any kind of pills you feel like down your patient's throat. There has to be a doctor's order, dosage, set times or PRN every 4 hours as needed for example, to give the medications. A nurse can't just waltz into the facility they work, or in this case train at, and say hmm I think I'll just give this resident an Ambien , that one over there gets some Ativan, and the one in the hallway will be getting a Buspar. It just doesn't work like that. In the earlier years of nursing that is pretty much how they handled things but they quickly learned that, that isn't the best way to treat people. Not everyone in a psych or long term care facility has the same doctor's orders. Each resident has their own tailored medication regimen to fit their individual needs.
You met Greg the resident stalker. Word of advise, do not lead him on, keep your distance from him AND have your injection needles ready, just in case.
It might be tough for your first week, but this is a great example of the aspects of the job you should have expected. Transference is a problem with people in therapy; it stands to reason that in a psych hospital it would be more so. FYL for the uncomfortable situation but YDI for not thinking this through and setting your expectations accordingly.
this was a fairly decent comment, apart from the fact that you said she should have expected it and that she deserved it... no one can start a job like that and think "okay so I need to prepare myself for when someone becomes obsessed with me..." some nurses who have worked in these places a long time probably haven't encountered all scenarios yet!
Ooh that's really creepy. I'd be careful of that one
Talk to your supervisor. That can be a very dangerous situation and you may be able to have that pataient taken off of your case load.
I feel for you op. I was on a physch ward due to depression and suicidal thoughts. One if the guys there thought I was someone else and would scream at me whenever he saw me. It was scary.
Make sure you talk with your supervisor for your student nurse position, and explain what's going on. The supervisor needs to know about the situation (your safety is in part your supervisor's responsibility, and the patient's behavior and treatment response could be affected), and you can also make sure you know about all security options open to you at that facility. Given that this is a teaching situation in which you're being evaulated, you may want to be careful not to sound like you're freaked out and want off the case -- even if that's what you really want. But above all, stay safe.
a*
I was wondering when the correction would be made, lol.
