Loraz tells us more.
Hey, so I'm from South Africa. It is general practice with most reputable shelter/rescue centres to inspect property, etc to ensure that there will be no problems resulting in the new owners having to return the animal. We also, unfortunately have a ridiculously high problem with dog fighting. On the up side, I was able to ask for a more experienced inspector to come around and give their opinion. It was a long a process and there were many hoops that we needed to jump through, but I can happily say that puppy is now at home with us, where he will spend the rest of his life being pathetically spoiled and loved. Oh, and so far, the pittie next door couldn't give a flying hoot about his new four legged neighbour.

So many people say it's about the training and not the breed. It seems to me that every time there's a story on television or in the newspaper about a child being brutally mauled, it's almost always a pit bull. Invariably, the owners say, 'We don't understand. Our dog has never done anything like this before.' Are they all liars? I don't think so. Up until that moment, they would have said, 'Our pit bull is the most loving, gentle dog.'
I'm not sure. I have heard so many differing opinions on pit bulls I don't know what to think. And I have never owned one. But, if I were going to get a dog, what's wrong with a plain old, all-American mutt? They make a perfectly good companion, and it won't cost you half your life savings to get one.
Hello from South Africa ????
I tried adopting from a local humane society but they had so many hoops to jump through and my application had to be "approved" and all this bullshit. So instead we trapped a feral kitten, got her vetted and fixed and she's now a fat happy house cat. Our dog we got from a couple who couldn't keep her. Beautiful white German Shepard, sweetest dog ever.

A dog breed has nothing to do with its behavior. It's all about how the dog, or any animal, is raised. A chihuahua could tear your foot off if it's been abused its whole life.
For animals inspectors, I would assume they would know that pit bulls are safe. Especially if it's separated by a wall that high!
