Today, my roommate confided in me that she hadn't been taking showers while at school because she was afraid of being in the shower when the fire alarm goes off. She goes home once every month, and will only shower there. I have to live with her for the rest of the year. FML

Same thing different taste
Today, my new roommate took a shower. This would be a good thing, except for the fact that it's apparently taken her two months just to take this one. I have to live with her for another year. FML
Pleasant smell
Today, while watching TV in my dorm, I clearly heard my roommate yell to someone proudly, "I've only taken a shower 4 or 5 times since I've been here." He's been my roommate for four months. FML
Today, the fire alarm went off in my dorm. Not only was it 30 degrees outside, but I was in the shower. FML
Stinky
Today, I realized that my flatmate showers so little that the furniture she uses smells like BO. FML
Today, despite using deodorant religiously and showering twice a day, my roommate still smells so bad that every time she enters the room I become physically sick. FML
Today, my roommate decided to go on a group trip instead of paying our water bill. Now I can't shower until next week. FML
Boundaries
Today, I woke up to my step-mother taking a shower in my bathroom. Of course, this would be fine, if my bathroom wasn't connected to my room and closet, or that I live in an apartment in their back yard, built before she moved in. FML
Today, marks the third week in which my girlfriend has gone without taking a shower. She does this every so often, taking showers roughly once per month. She's convinced baby wipes will "hold her over". FML
Today, I came back from break to find that my roommate had been shitting in the bathtub for the entire 2 weeks I had been gone. FML
Today, my roommate has gone home for the weekend. She forgot to turn her alarm clock off. Her door is locked. FML

Poor thing, I have similar anxiety about showering in bathrooms with no natural light, or that have extractor fans. When I lived in a flat with a bathroom like that for a year and a half I had to shower with the bathroom door open (luckily I lived alone :P). Maybe suggest she go to the campus health service and see if they have counsellors who could help her with that?

I understand that she's scared, but that's honestly disgusting.

Is it just in the bathroom or do you need to have a window open to sleep and so on?

I don't like rooms without natural light in general and I'll always turn a fan off if I can, but the real anxiety is specific to steam from the shower + electric lights = completely irrational fear of short circuits, plus if there's a fan I'm already on edge from the noise.

1/93- Have you ever tried exposure therapy? I have been emetophobic for as long as I can remember. I've always wanted to be a nurse and exposure therapy is what allowed me to go to nursing school and deal with a profession that involves a lot of vomit. I still get slightly panicky when a patient vomits, but I am able to cope with it and take care of patients instead of running out of the room with my eyes shut and ears plugged. Even though we don't have anxiety about the same situation, maybe exposure therapy could help you.

What if OP offered to stand guard while they showered?
Jryan952015 7
Throw a bucket of ice cold soapy water on her once a week until she starts to shower
MidnaLink 33
Does it have to be ice cold?
worldclassrager 39
Hot would kill the germs...cold will just make her shudder...
Jryan952015 7
Throwing hot water on someone can hurt them if you don't know there tolerance for the heat. If you throw ice water on them then they just need to get in the shower and warm them self up.

A lot of people have that problem, ask her if she would like to see a counselor or someone of that nature.

That sucks, she is gross. Better find a new roommate.

She just has anxiety. I understand what she feels, since i had the same fear. She just needs counseling
Roxas_hearts 27
It's called anxiety. I wouldnt go around saying you don't understand the big deal because it IS a big deal for them. Anxiety sucks, look at it from the room mates point of view.

I have a general anxiety disorder and I agree with the poster. Get a new roommate. I also have OCD & diagnosed germ phobia and I don't expect people to bend to my wants. She sounds disgusting

Your lack of empathy implies either a mild case or a self/misdiagnosis. It seems a fair assumption that you were never written up for being late because you had to drive home three times to make sure your apartment was actually locked, despite getting up two hours early, or lost friends because they didn't understand why you would continually "choose" to take a three hour shower instead of going out with them as planned. Anyone with a bad case is painfully aware that the world will never accommodate them, unfortunately they are put in the situation on a daily basis where they get to choose between alienation and the worst fears their minds can concoct.
lavapants 15
Yeah her life sucks but we are talking about OP here which is screwed now too. It may be a mental disorder but that doesn't make it any less gross.
addioty 19
No, I was diagnosed by two psychologists. Who are you to say I self diagnosed? **** you.
addioty 19
Also, no. You either don't make plans or get help. If I'm in a situation where I will be forced to touch something without my washcloth I don't make plans in the first place

Is there not a fire alarm at home for her to be anxious about as well?
fpants2010 18
I doubt her parents would perform a fire drill, especially when they know she's in the shower.
yerawizardlizzy 27
Have you lived in a dorm? Fire alarms in dorms and fire alarms in homes are not the same thing. Plus a dorm houses hundreds of people who have to exit the building with her. I can see where she's coming from.
MonstreBelle 29
In addition to worrying about fire drills like 12 pointed out, there are also assholes who will pull fire alarms because they think it's funny or they want to delay taking a test or turning in an assignment
klutz44 28
She could talk to the RA staff and ask about the fire drill schedule. They should be accommodating, especially if she's getting counseling (which she should). Being worried about someone pulling the fire alarm to get out of a test shouldn't be an issue in a dorm.

89-It was definitely a problem at my college. The protocol was to evacuate the dorm and stay put while everyone was accounted for and firefighters checked the entire building. By the time we were given the all clear, some of us would have missed our class. It was frustrating to miss a class because some jackass didn't study or finish an assignment. Hopefully OP's college has a better protocol in place.

For those saying the roommate is gross and disgusting, this is part of an anxiety disorder that she struggles with. I can understand where she's coming from. Shame on you for disrespecting a mental health disorder. OP only has to put up with a smell of someone who doesn't shower. The roommate has to put up with the crippling effects of anxiety.
laden_swallow09 34
Her ass stank! Now she's making it everyone's problem.

As someone with general anxiety disorder and OCD I agree, that's disgusting.

hi roommate. nice try.

I had this roommate that never showered or changed clothes. The whole classroom could smell her and started to use perfume during classes. Our headteacher gave her one day off and asked her to shower when no one else could leave school for entrance exams.
