FML's comment rules
If you’re on this page voluntarily, we congratulate you on your manners. Otherwise, well done. You are lucky to have landed on this page, randomly or not, because it’s important to us that our members keep informed of what is expected of them with regards to behavior on our website and apps.
Posting comments on FML means that you commit to respecting one another as you would in any other contemporary society, but also to adhering to the following rules. Because without respect, what would life be? Tennis without a racquet? A bicycle without a saddle?
Write in full
Abbreviations and TXT language are forbidden. Please write words in full and be careful with your spelling, even if it means reading your comments over several times before posting them. Don’t try to justify yourself by saying that “FML” itself is TXT language. It isn’t. It’s an initialism.
No “fake” claims
Stating in a comment that you think that an FML isn’t believable or “fake” is forbidden because it’s useless and baseless. The published stories can seem far-fetched, but remain plausible and believable because they were democratically elected to appear on FML. If you have irrefutable proof that an FML is fake, write to us directly and it will be removed. We strive for truthfulness, and this can be verified in the section called “FML – The follow up” in which the authors of the FMLs can explain in greater detail what happened to them. Go check out this section to see that we want to bring you slices of real life, and not made up inventions. And you might enjoy reading them. Maybe.
If it’s on FML, it’s an FML
Be nice: don’t ruin the atmosphere by stating, “Not an FML” or “Why is this an FML?” By definition, if it’s on FML, it’s an FML. This sort of comment is just annoying after the 600th time. Even if you mean it in a nice way. If you don’t like, or understand a story, move on to the next one.
Respect first
Being disrespectful, being aggressive and insults are banned, no matter whether they are directed towards the author of the FML, someone mentioned in the FML or someone in the comments. FML is a nice place to hang out. Take your anger issues elsewhere, thanks.
Stay on topic
Don’t go off topic. There’s absolutely no need to post comments about where you are in the comments (really, no one cares that you’re “FIRST!”), about someone’s profile picture or to comment on someone’s spelling. Just comment on the FML, and all will be fine.
No trolling, no thread-jacking
We also warn you that the following are forbidden: being a troll (provoking people into a sterile debate) as well as an abusive use of the reply function (replying to the first comment instead of just commenting, thread-jacking, etc.). Create your own thread; otherwise we reserve the right to delete your comments.
Respect the law and everyone
Adhere to current laws (don’t incite to drug taking, to alcohol abuse, to racism, anti-Semitism, etc.). Avoid all sexist and homophobic comments, as well as anything negative about a category of people that you wouldn’t talk about in the same way if they were in front of you. Don’t be a keyboard warrior, or an internet tough guy. We love everyone on FML.
