I'm guessing they were cheering because class was canceled until further notice, not because someone died. Maybe they didn't know you were dating the professor's son? What if they didn't know the reason why class was canceled? I'm not saying that doesn't suck, or that it was a nice thing to do.
I found myself wondering as well... If someone told me my professor's son had died I would feel sorry for him/her no matter if I like him or not. I better hope those "friends" didn't know about the death when they cheered... What kind of attitude is that? "Oh hey, someone's beloved child died but classes are cancelled, let's party" If they knew and still celebrated then time to get some new friends I guess... And don't even get me started then about that guy being your boyfriend...
