Today, my "nephew" told my sister that she is in fact a strait, cisgender girl and that the last 5 years was just "a phase." The whole procedure cost our family over $20,000, and part of the genre reassignment procedure involved chemically destroying her uterus. FML.

This is why I think gender reassignment should only be allowed with legal adults (I'm assuming she's still living with her mother, and thus also not an adult).

Except that goes back to the era of medical gatekeeping, because people use it as an excuse to put ALL transition resources behind an age based barrier. Which increases the risk of depression, suicide, assault, and murder. Especially since, contrary to the situation in OP's post, most people under the age of eighteen don't have access to the resources required to transition to that degree.

"Straight," not "strait." One is a direction and the other is a body of water. More importantly, your sister's child is a huge brat if she really went through with transitioning despite knowing she wasn't trans. Idiots like her are where "transition gatekeepers" come from, and consequently the reason why it's still considered acceptable in some places to refuse to put trans children on hormone blockers. Because making them go through the wrong puberty and skyrocketing their dysphoria, mental and emotional stress, and risk of suicide just to make sure is somehow the better option. Somehow, keeping them from going through ANY puberty and having them transition socially first, with careful monitoring and regular check ins, is the 'worse' option.

On the plus side, at least she can't procreate.
