Today, my mother-in-law showed up out of the blue at my workplace for an afternoon shift. Five months ago, my husband and I laid some very clear boundaries for his parents and restricted contact to our own terms. She knows I've worked here for a year, but tried to play it off as coincidence. FML.

Time to upgrade from "restricted contact", to a restraining order. And make it a big one.

She is challenging you by overstepping your boundaries thinking you won't do anything about it and she'll get away with her unwanted behavior. The only way to get it to stop is to use "punishment." I put it in quotations because it's not necessarily punishment, but rather showing her there are consequences will eventually keep her in line. The best route is to talk it out with your partner and decide what consequence is best. For example, you both choose not to participate in/join her Thanksgiving dinner party, or there will be a longer period of time before she gets to see the kids (if you have any). Just because she's your MIL does NOT mean she has the right to disrespect you or your partner. I wish you luck in dealing with this.
