So yeah I've seen some comments asking for a follow up... I'm a girl. my mom has always said that her greatest regret was not having more children herself, but she's, you know, going through menopause... So I think wanting a lot of grandchildren is her way of making up for that. She has also clarified that she will be happy with four grandchildren, which is what I want to have. It was just wishful thinking that she could have that many grandchildren to help raise. Sorry if this long comment is confusing, but I hope it helps to clear things up!

Most people who say they want X grandchildren (as opposed to other levels of descendants) say so because they want to make sure there are enough people to take care of them in their old age, as they're starting to reach that age and thinking about it. My grandma is in assisted living and constantly complains she has only 2 grandkids to shop for her and take her to her many doctor appts, etc. It's also more people to visit her or send cards to show off to her friends.

Tell your mom that no one this day and age can afford 10 kids. Remind her that this was only customary years ago as farmers needed free labor (nothing's totally free as they had to feed and take care of them). We have three children and I had to quit my pretty decent job to stay home and raise them, but I was fortunate that my husband had a decent job also. Daycare costs are outrageous and even with my good paying job the math didn't add up. I had no idea how expensive 3 kids were going to be, Lawd have mercy with four. Best wishes and start saving yesterday:)
