I know I may get hate for this comment but from personal experience, I feel like "long breaks" create larger boundaries between the couple. You're essentially spending that time learning to "live without the person". Yes sometimes things get very sticky and there are constant fights, but it's always good to talk things out and figure out what went wrong instead of just taking "long breaks". Perhaps "short breaks" and discussions are better. Long breaks without an actual discussion is the same as breaking glass but never picking up the pieces. The problem is still there AFTER the "break". I feel really bad for you OP. I hope you're not too hurt and can find ways to move forward. I've been through it too and it sucks. :/
