Then why don't you go for some sports? You're lucky your dad encourages outdoor activities. So stop being a lazy twat and go get some fresh air for a change!
Wow, someone's a bit of arrogant prat. Actually, two someones, in regards to this FML. First off, unless the OP preference for reading is actively endangering their health, what the dad did is a dick move and if he tries to cut them off from all reading material- which, to be frank, would not surprised given what people like the father tend to be like- it is considered abuse. Cutting them off from reading material will hurt them in both the short and long run. Second off, "You're lucky your dad encourages outdoor activity." Sorry, but this isn't "encouraging" it's "do this, because I said so." Not everyone can participate in "outdoor activities," or enjoys doing so. Unless lack of participation Is damaging them mentally, emotionally, or physically, forcing someone into an activity for something that sounds rather like an unsubstantiated opinion, isn't a good thing. Especially since it's likely the father himself isn't active himself. And third, and most importantly, "stop being a lazy twat"? What ******* right do you have to call someone not only lazy, but a twat, in response to them being upset at having A TOOL FOR EDUCATION taken from them? Is learning somehow "lazy" in your warped perspective of the world? If so, I suppose you must not trust doctors. After all, they spend close to eight years, or more, reading, reading, reading and thus must be all horribly lazy people. Ah, wait. Being a doctor tends to be one of the jobs with the longest hours for those who take their career seriously, let alone for those that not only take their career seriously but also attempt to help those in need. Not to mention, making it through eight years of schooling isn't exactly in the same land as "lazy."
You realize not everyone enjoys or is even good at sports and outdoors activities? That doesn't mean they're lazy, just have different hobbies. The father has no respect for who OP is as a person, and forcing someone to change their personality and likes to fit your standards is damaging, unhealthy, and makes a person feel like something is wrong with them, when nothing really is. My parents used to be a little like OP's, pushing me to do sports and activities, when I wanted to read and be at home. Thinking it would help me, when all's it did was make me anxious and lower my self-esteem because they treated who I was as a flaw that needed to be changed. This did not make me "lucky." It gave me image and confidence issues that took years to recover from. When I hit 16, I put my foot down, no more. Just because some people need stimulation, activities, and a wide group of friends, doesn't mean that's what I need to be happy and healthy. Not everyone needs to be a cookie cutter that follows a constantly stimulated, sports/outdoor drawn lifestyle. To think everyone has to be that way, to be like you, is selfish.
I don't see how this could even be a fml. your dad won't spend his hard earned money on things you could very very easily check out for free from a public library? if it were school books that you needed and couldn't just check out from a library then maybe I could see a real issue there. find ways of making your own money to buy books or get a library card.
#4- Library cards are free. Libraries only charge late fees for overdue books, and 1-3 dollars for replacement cards if you lose the first one. If you're responsible enough, you never pay a dime. #2 is missing the point though. OP probably puts a high value on intellectual enrichment, it's a big part of who they are. The father has zero respect for reading or academic pursuits, and therefore zero respect for OP.
Not all libraries are free, an example being the one by my house, but other than that I agree completely.
most libraries are free, and as someone previously mentioned, they only charge for late returns, damage to books or anything else you checked out, lost cards or other things that can easily be avoided. even if the library where OP lives isn't free it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper to get a library card than to go out and buy every book you read. OP is 19 according to his user name. he is more than old enough to have this sort of thing figured out.
I'm not sure if it's still that way or not, but a lot of parents in India basically "own" their kids until they get married or turn... 25? Or a least emotionally manipulate them into staying there and forfeiting any money they earn. So even if OP did have a job, there's no guarantee he'd have access to his own money. A lot of parents in India also don't believe that their children have any privilege to privacy, and it sounds very much like the father doesn't just want to not buy books anymore, but like he wants OP to stop reading. And before anyone says something rude- I'm referring to information given by people who were born and raised in India and are raising their own kids. So I'm not making this up. So, judging the situation by Western standards isn't exactly the best thing to do, since you are missing some context if you do so.
Time to start reading outside! There you go it's now an outdoor activity. ;)

#6 I'm not sure what kind of area you're in, but where I am all libraries charge for their cards.
