Today my aunt claimed that autism in girls is a lie and is used as an excuse for "different people". Later I became very unsettled due to too many people at the mall and had a "shutdown". She bitched me out for being an attention seeker. I have Asperger's syndrome and I'm a girl. FML

Not only is she completely wrong, but it sounds very much like her behavior is in fact abusive to you. You should talk to your parents about her if possible, and make it clear that she either needs to be educated about your condition before she is around you again, or she just need to be outright kept away from you. Verbally or physically abusing and autistic person during a shutdown can not only prolong it, but also risks turning it into a meltdown or otherwise causing the person to panic and potentially act out in a violent way. If anything, Autism in females is under diagnosed because they get forced into behavior patterns that mask the early symptoms. Not to mention some of the ****** op differences in how they are taught to cope. If you somehow wind up in the situation again- which, if your parents are in the picture and are even slightly decent people, you shouldn't be in this exact one- or something similar, find a bathroom and hide in there for a while. If it's a single person bathroom, even better. Stim, meditate, count, do whatever you need to do to decompress that isn't harmful to yourself or your surroundings. And to make sure you read it from someone... You are valid, you exist, your autism isn't made up, you aren't retarded or stupid, and you deserve to be treated with the same respect and understanding that anyone else with a disorder should get.
