Today, it's my girlfriend's birthday. I presented her with an oil painting of her that I'd been working on for over a month, and she started to cry. I thought it was because she liked it, until she asked if she really looks that ugly and disproportionate in real life. FML

I would be totally flattered if my boyfriend did a painting of me, regardless of how bad it could be. Stuff that you put real effort into is worth a lot more than jewelry, candy, etc. to me.

Your girlfriend obviously doesn't understand art. Either that or it really did just suck, next time get her flowers bro.

Unless you are Da Vinci, never paint you girlfriend/wife. I thought everyone knew this rule...

Oh god she didn't appreciate the time and effort you put into that .... Sorry op

It's your perspective and as an artist you should be able to explain that to her.

Aw. She sounds like the overly-emotional type, way too insecure. The home-made gifts are by far the best! You must be the abstract sort of artist, not the realistic ^_-. Or at least, that's what you should tell her! You're never going to be able to fully capture your significant other's "beauty," but you can put some thought into it, which you obviously have. You could tell her it portrays how ugly and disproportionate you feel without her. That would get her. She sounds like she still has the mind of a child though, tbh. That's quite selfish and conceited, interestingly enough, thinking. Hopefully she'll grow up fast.

Whatta bitch. If my boyfriend was sweet enough to do tht I'd be thankful no matter what it looked liked. Fyl

What a beezy. I would be thrilled if my boyfriend took a month of his life to paint me something that meaningful. The handmade gifts are always the ones you never forget, even if the one making them isn't particularly artistic.
