Today, it's my birthday. I was screamed at, told off and ignored for most of the day. My present before the day was over? My rent is going up 25% and my landlord thought it would make a good Happy Birthday to me and was mad at me for not being "happier" about it. FML

Washington, where the OP is located, is a no-rent-control state: limitations on rent increases are banned statewide, for all dwellings.

I was totally happy to see my rent go up- said NO ONE in the history of EVER. The landlord is either delusional or was just being a sarcastic douchebag. Also, in my state it's illegal to raise the rent more than 10% in a single year- you should probably check if your state has a similar law.

I agree with #1- check and see if that is legal. I know in apartment complexes it isn't, but not sure about rental houses. In any case, happy ( belated ) birthday OP!! May your next year on this God forsaken planet be better than the last!
