I was totally happy to see my rent go up- said NO ONE in the history of EVER. The landlord is either delusional or was just being a sarcastic douchebag. Also, in my state it's illegal to raise the rent more than 10% in a single year- you should probably check if your state has a similar law.
Washington, where the OP is located, is a no-rent-control state: limitations on rent increases are banned statewide, for all dwellings.
I agree with #1- check and see if that is legal. I know in apartment complexes it isn't, but not sure about rental houses. In any case, happy ( belated ) birthday OP!! May your next year on this God forsaken planet be better than the last!
