I'm also a cashier at McDonald's, someone has tried this with me, but I'm a bit more experienced, so I was able to handle it well. Next time just focus on the change you need to give out and close the till. Say something like "Oh it's not a problem, I have enough change in here for a fifty, you don't want to carry large bills on you anyway!" And if they are upset with you explain the situation to a manager. I hope you aren't in too much trouble. Best of luck OP
At my job we call it "quick changing" and they target people who look young or new. The way to beat their system is to know what money they give you and what you give them. Never trade money once you've entered the amount into the register. If they claim that you didn't give them the correct change, get a manager immidiately. They will either audit the till or review the camera footage. If you ever get confused or flustered by a customer handing you money (thats their game), say out loud "okay stop. one thing at a time" if they keep trying to confuse you, get a co-worker or manager to step in.

He fast cashed you, the common way my work calls it. Instead of taking the money he gives you, hand him his change, and close the drawer. If he wants different change explain to him that your manager will assist him. That will either scare the customer off, or the situation will not be on you.
Typical flim flam scam. Sorry hun, most young cashiers go through it at a some point. They specifically target the younger less experienced cashiers because they're easier to confuse/fluster and less likely to just say no and shut the drawer.
