Today, I went over to my crush's house for the first time. Everything was going great until his dog came up to me, smelled my crotch, and immediately began making horrible coughing sounds and backing away in terror. Thanks, bud. FML.

Everybody is saying "take a shower!" but OP's name is "JustShowered" so I believe that base has been covered. So either the scent cannot be helped by an ordinary shower, the OP does not shower well, or the dog was just putting on a show and the scent didn't cause them to cough.

Laundry detergent scents can be very mild and pleasant for humans, but an overpowering slap in the face for dogs (with their sensitive noses). Ever since I switched to Gain, my parents' dogs will always sneeze once or twice after they sniff the knees of my jeans.

the coughing could be completely unrelated to your crotch. ..he could have heartworms which cause dogs to cough alot...just bad timing
