Today, I was on the phone with my best friend who lives on the opposite side of the country. During this phone call she let slip that my parents had gotten divorced 2 months ago. They hadn't even told me yet. FML

Why would your parents tell your best friend first and not their flesh and blood kid? Sounds like you have something to bring up next time you see them.

I'm sorry OP, what your parents did was wrong. Many times they think they're saving you from pain, but it doesn't, I find approaching it like this makes it worse because it's basically lying. This was a major change in your life and they didn't even keep you informed on your own family. That isn't right, and you need to tell them how upset that makes you feel. Hiding what's going on from your kids gives them no time to process it, and this big life changing event is just thrown on them all at once. You need to ease them into it, they're a part of the family, they need to be informed in their family's status too.
