For future incidents, this is how the laws of the USA were explained to me: if you are out for surgery, the teacher assigns a long term project, and you have a written medical notice that says you were out for surgery- the teacher, legally, CAN NOT make you do the project while on medical leave. They HAVE to give you the project when you come back to school, and they HAVE to give you either equal time that your classmates had, or a "reasonable" time period. The only way the teacher could have made you do the project while you were at home is if you had been partially cleared for school and were receiving your schoolwork to do at home via email- which, even then, the teacher would have been required to inform you when the project was assigned to your class, or the instant they were informed you had been cleared to work from home. Since it doesn't sound like the latter is the case, explain to your mother what happened, and the two of you make an appointment with the principal and the teacher, and demand that the teacher lets you redo the project or an equivalent, but also give the CORRECT time limit. You can't get back the sleep and stress, but you can sure as hell try to get even. Especially since the teacher sounds like they're already targeting you.
