Today, I've been told once again that I'm "a lazy, spoiled brat" because I don't have a job. I'm sixteen, and I live in a town where I have to be at least eighteen to be even interviewed for the currently available jobs. FML

Don't get me wrong, having a summer job or two in highschool can be a great way to prepare for the grown up world to come. But it's not a 16 year old's responsibility to provide for the houshold. Your "job" is to finish highschool and help with house chores. And like you said, you can't legally work right now. So what do they expect you to do, deal drugs?

Love how about half the responses to adults emotionally harassing (and abusing, if it's OP's family saying this) a sixteen year old is "**** focusing on your school, go work for people who will probably exploit you because you can't get any other job!" Really, people?

Maybe your appearance makes u look older than u are

Most companies that say 18 or older is because of liability reasons and won't look at you otherwise.

My mother started saying this as soon as I hit high school. Her live-in boyfriend didn't have a job and didn't help with ANY household bills, yet somehow had money for 2-3 cases of beer a week. Parents can suck.

What about looking for nanny/babysitting jobs or doing yard work for people?

From my experience, a lot of people will refuse to trust teens with those sorts of jobs.

And in my experience, if they do want to hire a teen for those jobs, they want to pay you five dollars an hour for three kids, fifteen dollars for cleaning an entire house, or other absurd "wages." And then they try to find an issue with your work in order to not pay you.

People nowadays just use those stupid websites and don't hire teens anymore. For God's sake, some of them want you to have a frickin degree.

But you can house sit and things like that you just need to be responsible to get those jobs and you can most likely handle it

I live in an extremely small town. But we have a couple fast food joints and a grocery store. All of which would hire a 16 yr old. And if you don't even have a grocery in your town, there are still jobs. Babysitting, pet sitting, lawn care, housecleaning, lots of things you can do to make money. While it isn't your responsibility to take care of your household at you age if will give you a valuable life experience.

Mow lawns, wash cars, shovel snow, etc... lol lazy and spoiled for sure

May if you had a job you would still be told you are a lazy spoiled brat. Really though, many small businesses will hire students to work part time if they can show they will be an asset. And it certainly helps your resume later when it shows you have a willingness and drive to work as a young person.

I call bullshit.. I'm 16, I live with my boyfriend and baby, i work AND im going to school when my fist paycheck comes in.. I workat McDonald's.. u can too..

Look into getting a work permit if you want to get a job. That's what I did when I was your age.
