Maybe they were talking about inflation, the wage gap, taxes or hypotheticals? I hate to be that person, but college kids often really aren't as retarded as everyone tries to make them out to be.
Hahaha sorry but it's so funny, because it reminds me how I used to think the same when I was a kid (not with dollars but the currency of my country) and it made so much sense to me because there is a saying "time is money" so you work for one minute and you get one forint (or one penny). Hahaha sorry my kindergartener self would understand the college students you've met.
They could also be discussing the exchange rate between two countries!
Or even the cost of the production of or materials in the coin/currency
