100% your own fault.
I'm undecided. Do you deserve it or not? Sure, you SHOULD have put the key back so that's your fault. But on the other hand it was an honest mistake
In my own, admittedly pitiful, defence, I was on about my 8th shift of 8.5 hours at work and was usually too tired after work to do more than go to bed after I got home, meaning I never got around to taking the key back to the neighbour who looks after it. Unfortunately, this also meant I was too tired to make sure I had my keys with me before leaving the house. Luckily, the owner of the house was available to come and let me back in.
