Today, I got into an argument with my daughter, who is adopted. She yelled, "You're not my real dad, you can't tell me what to do!" Her real dad is my wife's rapist.

Does she know why you aren't her biological father? If not, and all she knows is that you aren't, it's a rather common angry thing for teenagers to say. It's also quite possible that she IS mad that you aren't her "real" father- because it means she's instead related to her mother's rapist, or because it makes her feel like she isn't as close to you as she would be if she were biologically yours. Best to wait until tempers cool and ask her if you not being her biological dad bothers her, and if so, why.

I'm guessing that she probably isn't old enough to understand the circumstances of her conception. I'm sure it's something that she will look back and cringe at once she's older. I know that I still feel bad for the one time I told my dad that I hated him.

Does she know the circumstances surrounding her conception?
