Why did so many people vote YDI? He used a dumb line, so he deserved to have his windshield broken?? Or is there some new rule where guys can't break up with their girlfriends?

I think people clicked "YDI" because of the hilarity. Also, OP's ex sounds a little crazy, something that probably showed itself before then (depending on how long they went out). So if OP were aware that his ex were unstable, he indeed does deserve it for using those words. Though it's unfortunate both that OP had to deal with someone unstable and that the unstable person in question probably won't get any help.
