Actually I had this type of "prank" played on me back in grade 7. I was the new girl, very shy and awkward. I thought I was going to die when one of the "popular" boys asked me out on a date. I very well could have when I met him and 4 girls beat the **** out of me while he and his buddies watched. 1 girl got expelled, everyone else got suspensions of varying degrees, no one had any charges laid, and I got 4 days in the hospital and sent right back to school. This was in 97 and I'm sure it was hardly a new concept then either.
