I assume you didn't respond to the message. If you talk about work at 2am this time then your boss with think you'll always do so. Respond at 8am like a civilised person - what will change between now and then?
Do. Not. Respond. I used to have a boss/teacher who would message me on breaks about stuff. I answered, so she then found it acceptable to bother me on weekends and holidays. The only way I escaped was that she left her position at the university to pursue better opportunities.
Did you answer? Personally I avoid anything work related unless I am at work. Pretty sure, outside of an emergency, no boss should need to contact an employee at 2am whether they are usually awake or not. How would be even know your awake at that time?
If possible, you should go to a doctor and discuss treatment options for your insomnia- lack of sleep utterly ruins your body in the long term. Obviously you don't want to jump straight into throwing major medication at it, but if your insomnia stays for much longer, you should at least consider it. I'm assuming that you've already tried over the counter stuff like melatonin and sleep medication, as well as 'sleep hygiene' stuff. As to your boss- unless you work for him in an official 'on call' position, I would suggest not responding to him, or if you already have, not doing so in the future. If you are off the clock, you are off the clock- he's not going to pay you for stuff you do at home (in most cases) so keep work at home to a minimal. Especially when you are trying to sleep.
My boss does this too, which is why I put my phone in airplane mode when I go to sleep and don't turn it back on until I get to work the next morning. Unless your job requires you to be on call 24/7 I'd suggest doing the same.
Work at 2 am! Idiot boss??
