I've been in a musical where one of the actors just didn't show up. so we just gave one of the ensemble guys a script and he went on like that. it went really well and he filled on for the rest of the performances too! maybe you can find a fill-in even if they need a script on stage, it's better than cancelling the show and I'm sure the audience will understand.
