Today, after two months of rehearsals, an actor in my theater company decided he was unhappy with the role I gave him, so he refuses to perform. We open tonight. FML

Unprofessional bastard. He's screwing it up for everyone, on a selfish whim. He should suck it up and do what he agreed to do. If you can't go on, make sure to explain why.

Make sure you let anyone else in other productions what kind of person this actor is. To go through all those rehearsals and then decide opening night he isn't satisfied with his role is completely unprofessional

Just go on without him. Where there's a pause where he would have lines, step on stage and say "This is where Frank should be talking."

It still surprises me how selfish ppl can be. At least fire him after you get things settled.

Well that's certainly a career-ending decision (nobody's ever going to hire the actor who bailed on a production on opening day). Also, as many others have already pointed out, that's what understudies are for.

No understudy? That is just way unprofessional and childish.

I'm pretty sure it's too late for him to pull out and that he is required by law to perform if he signed a contract

Just let him know that YOUR time will come. Be explicit.

Hopefully he has an understudy who can step in?

What he's doing is completely unprofessional and should end his career. I hope he knows that. I also hope you have an understudy. Why the hell didn't he tell you earlier that he wasn't happy?

Hopefully he's got an understudy. Go on without him.
