Just go on without him. Where there's a pause where he would have lines, step on stage and say "This is where Frank should be talking."
It still surprises me how selfish ppl can be. At least fire him after you get things settled.

Well that's certainly a career-ending decision (nobody's ever going to hire the actor who bailed on a production on opening day). Also, as many others have already pointed out, that's what understudies are for.
No understudy? That is just way unprofessional and childish.
Just let him know that YOUR time will come. Be explicit.
