Today, after seven months studying in Italy, I understood that the "Finocchio" nickname that my Italian friends gave to me really means "Queer". FML

Welp, it looks like it's time to buy some white out and hit up the children's section of the library. I've got my eyes on you, Pinocchio.

He most likely never thought anything of it.

It took 7 mos to translate that? My phone can do it in seconds. But it still sucks for you OP. Sorry

But do they mean gay or odd? There is more than one meaning, either way it's rude.

I believe the translation is closer to "sissy". The Godfather calls Johnny Fontaine that slur when he starts crying.

Actually the correct translation is "queer" meaning "gay". I apologize to the OP for their rudeness - being Italian I kinda feel that I have to!

It cant mean queer, as in odd, as originally defined #7?

No, it's a disrespectful way of calling someone gay.

And universities wonder why international students don't stay...

I hope you never met someone new and said "Ciao, sono Finocchio"

May I ask why that is your username, then?

well if they dont speak english give them a similar name in english & call them that

Actually a lot of European countries speak English as a second language. Its required in almost all schools so they would most likely know English as well :)

Why did you never bother to find out what it means?

Probably because he thought it simply meant "fennel".

Oh, I apologize in the name of all Italians! That really is rude. And yes: It means gay, homosexual, queer...
