They can only speak, to feel "berated" is your choice. As kids in India often are, I was often yelled at and beaten for not doing home work or talking in class (no detentions for us) the only times I fell ashamed or berated was when a teacher I respected said something to me. Most times they'd be yelling and I'd be laughing on the inside cuz they left the fly open, or how they frothed when they yelled and every minute they yelled at us was a minute less we'd have to endure of their "teaching".
