I can imagine that feeling awkward, and I'm sorry you learned more than you would have liked. That being said, a lot of people, myself included, keep their most personal items at their bedside. Unless you had your mother's permission to look there, I think searching her cabinet, even if it was just to find a magazine, was a bit of a privacy violation, and you should have been prepared to stumble across some sensitive material.
