Op, when my mom was dying, I would have loved to get a glow-in-the-dark duck. It shows someone cares, even if they do not know what to do.
At least you tried, with what you had. Did it work?
There's nothing wrong with a glow-in-the-dark duck. I have several myself.
You also raced to get him despite never have met him and cared enough to try and cheer him up/make him feel better. It's the sort of kindness that will never be forgotten... also. who doesn't love a glow in the dark duck?

What I take away from this is that you drove a man you'd never met to meet with his dying mother. It is the most precious gift you could have given.
