Today, my long-term boyfriend still does not want to get married and file our taxes jointly, but rather wants to claim me as a “dependent” so he gets a bigger refund. FML

You actually can claim an unmarried partner as a dependant, subject to a few rules (including if they make less than a certain amount and if you pay more than half their expenses). But that's not a great excuse if you want to get married and that's honestly his reasoning for not doing it.

He's withholding too much if he gets a refund every year. What? Oh, your relationship. It's doomed. I thought you wanted tax advice.
