Today, after my wife and mother in law criticized me for being glued to my phone, I set out to prove them wrong by being away from it. When I finally opened it, my family was upset because my grandma died and they had been trying to reach me for several hours. FML

Sorry for your loss. It appears your grandmother was a loved person. When they say glued to the phone, the idea and image conveyed is that you are constantly reading/using the phone and not giving the real world proper attention. While the knee-jerk reaction is to put it in a drawer to prove you are not that dependent, you also lose the vital tool. The better solution is to put the phone in your pocket and mute most notifications. That way you are reachable in emergencies like your family experienced. As in all things it's about moderation and balance.
