I work with someone who is allergic to shellfish as well and she went to the East Coast (Nova Scotia) and we live in Alberta. I had no idea why, but she met lots of chefs that trip!!!

That's actually not too dissimilar from how my MIL found out that she's deathly allergic to seafood. The first time she ate fish was on a date where the guy ordered for her (I guess it was "that" kind of restaurant?) and she went into anaphylactic shock. Asked by a paramedic what she had eaten, she replied, "I don't know; ask him!" In response to the inevitable questions: This was many years ago; she recovered; yes, she has a medical ID bracelet and carries epinephrine.
