Today, I was taken to the hospital after I fell down the stairs. The physician who saw me bit his lip and said he would have to amputate my foot, and I fainted in terror. One of the nurses later told me to "learn to take a damn joke." FML

Wow I get that it was a joke but that's horrible to scare someone like that

Being a doctor, he should know not to make such jokes. Not everyone takes them.

The op is pretty stupid if he/she believes that you would need an amputation after falling down the stairs.

That was not an appropriate time to be joking about that kind of thing...

Tell them next time they will have to amputate for real cause your foot is gonna be stuck in their ass.

there's a difference between making a joke and being an @$$ hole.

FYL since you weren't expecting a comment like that, but for physicians and virtually everyone who works in 'high-stress' jobs (e.g. military, emergency services etc.) those sorts of jokes are completely normal, so your physician and the nurse who spoke to you after were probably desensitised to the point that they didn't realise and couldn't understand that a lot of people wouldn't take the joke well. By their standards that sort of joke is very tame actually, just so you know. So you probably don't need to take it too personally. I worked briefly in the medical field and my co-workers and myself would frequently make jokes about things far worse than that, and every other person I knew who worked in the same field did the same thing. To people who don't frequently deal with the sorts of situations those in high-stress jobs do it can come across as harsh, but to those of us who do/have it's just our everyday routine.

I don't have a problem with the doctor saying the joke. How was he supposed to know OP would react like that? It probably wouldn't have been a big deal if the nurse hadn't said anything. She was way out of line.

@78 Stop giving medical opinions. I dislocated my ankle and damaged the ligaments to the point it was in a brace for 2 months. And I still was able to limp on it.
