Today, I found the source of the bad smell that has been plaguing me for the past two weeks in my apartment. The police knocked on my door asking if I've seen my neighbor recently. I haven't. The smell has been that of a dead person. It's a smell that even Febreze can't remove. FML

Today, I finally determined the source of the horrible smell that periodically invades my apartment: there's nothing wrong with the plumbing as I previously thought, I can just smell my neighbors pooping in their bathroom on the other side of the wall. FML

Today, I opened my front door to be greeted by what I can only describe as the stink of death. After moving furniture and lifting floorboards, frantically searching for whatever had died, I finally discovered the actual source of the stench - my girlfriend's feet. FML

Today, I returned home after a four day weekend at my parents' house. Upon entering by the front door, a horrid stench assaulted my nose. Hours later I still cannot find the source of the foul odor. I'm starting to wonder if this is how it's always smelled without my knowing. FML

Today, I came home to a terrible smell in the apartment. Three hours, and a scoured kitchen later, I took the trash out. The smell was not my apartment, but from just across the alley; a neighbor had moved and emptied their fridge. Six more days of sunned milk until pickup. FML

Today, I woke up to a weird smell in my apartment. I checked everywhere but couldn’t find the source. After a while, I discovered the smell was coming from the pile of laundry I'd left in the corner, laundry that I thought was clean. It was the gym clothes I'd thrown in there three weeks ago. FML

Today, I realized my morbidly obese, sweaty sibling is the source of a strange waft I've been smelling when I get home. He'll only shower once a week, so the apartment and furniture smell like sweat and sometimes poo, especially on hot days. I didn't notice until I went outside and stepped back in to follow my nose. FML

Darn... that's terrible... Take is easy #209 - I seriously doubt anyone would have guessed their neighbour was lying dead in the apartment next door, especially if they'd never smelled a decaying corpse before.

Well, for all the people bashing the OP for not checking...I don't always see my neighbors in my apartment building. The one across the hall I only see every couple of weeks. The OP's neighbor could have been a recluse or just nasty. Who knows? Besides, how could you expect someone who's never smelled decomp to recognize it? How many people here would recognize decomp if they smelled it? And no, you idiots, it was not in the OP's apartment...that's just stupid. Wise up. It was his neighbor, in the apartment next door. DUH.

What is it with everyone asking if his neighbor died in the OP's apartment? They were quite obviously neighbors. And #99, unless it was requested by the family, local news won't cover that kind of story unless they suspect foul play. They most likely died of natural causes. And unless you live in the same city as the OP, you probably never would have heard about this on the news. Things like this don't end up on national television.

I feel for you dude. We had a horrible odor penetrating my apartment to the point that we thought someone had died, and the police come and thought that someone had too, so they started ripping up apartments. But they didn't find any dead humans. they ripped up the ceiling in my kitchen and found a dead raccoon. Not as gross as a dead body, but I can totally confirm the possibility of this happening.
