Today, I tried to compliment a colleague on her new hairstyle. I said, “You look different today!” She took it as an insult, thinking I meant she looked worse. She hasn’t spoken to me since. FML

Today, I tried to compliment a coworker on her new haircut, saying, “Wow, it makes you look so much younger!” She raised an eyebrow and replied, “You mean I looked old before?” My brain short-circuited and I followed up with, “No, no, you just… looked older.” Everyone within earshot laughed while I wanted to crawl under the desk. Just don't comment on anybody looks at work.

Well that isn’t a compliment. A way to compliment someone’s new haircut is “hey. I like your new haircut.”

Never a good idea to comment on a co-worker's appearance, even if meant as a compliment.
