Today, while driving my new car, a squirrel ran in front of me so I slammed on my brakes. The person behind me didn't notice and rear-ended me. The squirrel got hit by a car going the opposite direction. FML

Hmmm... that's why you don't "slam on your brakes" for small rodents:(

You're supposed to keep driving unless it's a animal that can cause an accident, like a deer. Otherwise, surprise surprise, the abruptent stop can cause an even bigger accident than hitting a squirrel. I'm 16 and I know this.

When I see a squirrel in the road, I speed up :). I've nailed a few gophers with my truck this way before haha.

Shoulda ran the little ****** over, it's a squirrel, it's not going wreck your car and cripple you...

Sorry to say, unless you're absolutely SURE there are no other cars in sight, the correct thing to do is ignore the animal. Sad, but you have no business causing an accident to spare it. Look at it this way - hit a squirrel too dumb not to run in front of a car, and the average intelligence of squirrels goes up a bit. Evolution in action.

I would have accelerated.

Bad driving decision! YDI. Swerve away or hit the squirrel. Don't slam on your brakes, you moron. It's not an elk or something. You basically endangered your life and the lives of other drivers to "save" a squirrel's life. F the life of the driver behind you!

you deserved it. you're not supposed to slam on brakes for a squirrel.

I would've just hit the squirrel....

that's why you're encouraged to run over the squirrel and stop accidents.

it doesn't matter how fast you stop, if you get hit then the person behind you is following too close. did you make squirel burgers?
