Today, my father tried to excuse his alcoholism by saying that his stomach stops working, and he needs to drink vodka to get it started again. FML

TJRoy tells us more.

He is Croatian, and he was sober. He 100% believes it's true and has said it on several occasions.

I'm sorry OP. I hope he wants and gets treatment soon. Even if he does not there is a free support group (an off shoot of AA) for the loved ones of alcoholics, go. They can help you with all your feelings and the fallout of his addiction. Everyone can use someone to talk to that understands where you are coming from and won't judge you for anything you say.Good luck.

I left the name of the group out. Sorry. It's AL-ANON.

My experience with AL-ANON was a tad to creepy for me.

Does anyone ever buy that excuse? Just curious as to whether to add it to my list of excuses. ;)

Try to convince him to go to a gastroenterologists office. Hopefully that will help. Any supportgroups he can go to?

Next time he says that say "yeah that's alcohol withdraws, which you wouldn't have if you didn't drink so much"

Hahaha oh god, I'm Bosnian and this mentality is so representative of the former Yugoslavian countries xD

OP's wife here. His mother uses it as a facial toner. She asks my husband to buy her the 'best quality' vodka so she can use it on her face. I have tried several times to get her to use something which is more gentle on the skin, but if she has used vodka for 50 years, I don't think we will be able to get her to change. Better than drinking it to apparently get her stomach going.

I thought it related to the FML very much. My wife was sharing how my mother views vodka. I'm sorry you can't see the funny side or how it relates.

Oh I see it now! I was confused because she was talking about your mom and you were talking about your dad. Wouldn't vodka burn her skin?
