Today, I woke up to the fire department at my house. Why? My brother called 911 thinking there was a fire after turning the heat on for the first time all winter. FML

Today, I woke up thinking my house was on fire because I could hear crackling flames downstairs. I panicked and tripped out of bed. It was the fireplace channel I left on last night so I could wake up to a Christmas ambiance. FML

Today, my smoke alarm went off. In a frenzy, I called 9-1-1 and exited my house. Several minutes later a fire truck showed up. After investigating, one of the firemen informed me I needed to change the batteries in my smoke alarm. FML

Today, my house caught on fire. After it was put out, I realized the damage wasn't bad, mainly smoke damage. I went to my parents' for the night because my house smelled. While there, I received a phone call from my neighbor. Apparently, my house caught fire again. It's now a pile of ashes. FML

Today, I was babysitting for my usual. After putting the baby to sleep I put some popcorn in the microwave and went to the bathroom. When I came out the whole kitchen was filled with smoke. One of the neighbors saw and called 911. I'm out of a job. FML

Today, I received a phone call at work about an emergency, and that I had to come home immediately. I arrived to find that no one had been hurt and the house hadn't burned down. The "emergency" was my mom had ran out of milk and cigarettes. FML

Fires in a fireplace can be very dangerous, and can be caused when theres alot of stuff in the chimney and it builds up and can light the fireplace on fire.

Here in Portland, we have ads for "creosote burning logs" which supposedly get rid of the creosote (fancy name for bits of wood) stuck in your chimney.

Uh, they don't mean like a normal fire. This is the exact reason we don't have fires in our fireplace anymore - they built it wrong. There are exposed beams in there or something.

Creosote-the stuff that causes such chimney fires- build up is actually a real problem. Luckily there are special things to buy to burn that destroy it. OP, FYL. I hope I never experience that. :(
