Today, a week after spending most of my paycheck on a down-payment and rent on a new apartment, I found out the "landlord" I paid was a scammer. Turns out the real owner was away on vacation, and he'd stolen most of her stuff before showing me the place. FML

Today, I spent 6 hours unloading boxes into my new apartment. After unloading the entire truck and making trips up and down two flights of stairs, I heard a knock on the door. Apparently the landlord gave me the key to the WRONG apartment. Mine is downstairs. FML

Today, I was on my couch when my landlord walked in. He asked what I was doing there. I responded with the same question. Apparently my roommate forgot to call me and tell me that our lease ended three days ago. I am now standing in the parking lot with all my belongings, and it is raining. FML

Today, our landlord showed up with police and legal paperwork that let him throw us out immediately. Apparently my husband has been ignoring eviction notices for months and having vicious arguments with the landlord. Now we’re homeless and everything we own is in storage. FML

When you buy a building where tenants live, you have to keep the tenants and their leases as is. Then, you can deposit a demand to evict a tenant to live in his/her apartment, but it takes at least six months, several hundred dollars and a bunch of hoops to jump into. The new owners are idiots who believe that if you're a tenant, you don't have the money or wits to hire a lawyer, several of which work pro bono and loooove this kind of case.

Yeah I've seen a ton of listings that will include something like "Owner to assume tenant" to let the buyer know that it's currently rented out. Also, who buys a house site unseen if 'move in' day is the first time the new owners are there and OP is getting notification that the property was sold??
