I'm a bit surprised you fell for it. Every time I had a phone interview in my recent job search, I knew the name of the person who would be calling by the time the interview was scheduled. And generally the first thing out of an interviewer's mouth is "Hi, this is <name> at <company>. Is this still a good time to talk?"
104 is absolutely right, so I don't understand the negative votes. Also, I'm not aware of anyone being hired after just a phone interview; it's usually how they decide if they want you to come in for an in-person interview.
Get new friends. What a bunch of dicks.
A joke gone too far there!
Find this "friend" and beat the crap out of him. Drag him into the job's office to show off his broken nose and black eyes. Have him explain what he did and why he's sorry. When he's done, request they give you another interview.
Not to say that this was OP's fault. But who doesn't have caller ID and caller waiting? Wouldn't you have known it wasn't your potential job calling and/or seen and heard the real interviewer call?
I think that criticism is really country specific. No one I know has caller waiting, and our telecommunications providers allow people to have "Blocked ID" display instead of the number, which is commonly used. OP could be in a similar situation. Also, how would OP know the interviewers number? It could easily have been arranged by email before the interview.
Some friend!
