Independance day

Today, a crying kid was brought to my attention by a customer. He was so upset from losing his mom that he couldn't say his or his mom's name. I took him around the store asking him to point out his mom. Once we'd found her she told me, "I was hiding from my kid to test his independence." FML

I hope you called CPS. You should never do that to a child. You can leave the room at home if you want to test his independence... Don't hide on him in the store and scare the poor baby half to death. That is wrong and I hope she gets her child taken away from her. Test HER independence...

Wow... that is just horrible. I can't even find words for it right now, I'm so pissed at that mom. Poor child...

That's incredibly mixed up - if the kid had then caught the subway home you can be sure the mother would have torn him off a strip for being too independent! Kids don't learn to swim by being thrown head-first into deep water! They learn by being introduced to increasingly stretching but achievable goals as their skills improve. The same applies with anything: If the goal is independence then stand by the checkout and send them to find something and return with it, or meet them in the ice-cream parlour after they have bought something, or whatever. Disappearing is a sure way to have them drown!

Poor kid, loosing your mom in a store is scary. I was 13 when it happened to me and I still majorly panicked. Children's aid should be called on her because obviously she doesn't deserve to have a child.
