Today, while riding my bike on the sidewalk, I came across a ladder. To avoid bad luck, I swerved around it into the street. I got hit by a car. FML

Surely a car is much bigger than a ladder and therefore more noticeable? Or if it hit you from behind you should have had the common sense for a quick look behind you, it's much easier to stop a 50ish pound bike than a 600+ pounds vehicle.
