If it can help you, here is an explanation adequate for a 9-year-old. Rape is when a person touches another person on their private parts without their consent. For example, if Uncle Larry gives a pat on little Debby's butt and little Debby did not want Uncle Larry to give her such a pat, that's rape, and Uncle Larry is a rapist. It has nothing to do with what little Debby is wearing or what she's doing at the time. Uncle Larry is a rapist because he wanted to touche little Debby's butt and he did. When an adult asks a child to touch them on their private parts, however, that's pedophilia, and that's also very bad. This is why there are social workers and psychologist to help children and punish the nasty pedophiles and rapists. If you don't know how to find a social worker or a psychologist, ask your mom.
Technically the first one legally classifies as molestation. Second one classifies as sexual assault but at 9, splitting hairs like I said doesn’t explain things well. But i think that explanation can be refined/reworded a bit. Most legal definitions of rape requires either forced insertion into some cavity, whether into victim, or attacker (depending on male/female for victim/attacker), but sexual assault of a degree for when not, unless there are other factors. Like aggravated assault can be determined by factors such as how, and why an act occurred. At least in the USA, motive factors into this heavily as well.
I would go no contact with MIL she sounds like a psychopath and possibly perverted a child SMH!
