Today, I was loving on a dog at work. I noticed her fur was coarse and short and I'd never felt anything like it before. I broke out in hives all over my face. This happens whenever I'm around any cats, guinea pigs, or rabbits and now some dogs apparently. I'm in school to be a vet tech. FML

You could look into specialising in birds, reptiles, amphibians or fish. You do get specific sanctuaries for one type of animal like birds of prey or reptiles and they do need vets and vet tech. You don't have to give up on working with all animals.

This sounds like a way more intimate contact than I thought would be necessary for a vet tech. However, maybe you should overthink your choice of profession and choose a different field.

You might want to choose a different profession, or spend your working life wolfing down fistfuls of anti-histamines. Speaking of wolves, have you checked to see if you're allergic to them, yet?

Stop using every thing with artificial color and flavor. This includes cosmetics. The 3 pickle chips on a burger have enough petrol based yellow dye to keep me allergic to animals for 3 days. Cosmetics also. Most countries with national health have eliminated this crap.

that probably means you're allergic to animals with fur

Don't worry OP, I'm a vet 3 years out and am allergic to pretty much every animal there is. It's manageable with antihistamines

Is there any meds you could take to tame it?? Or worst comes to it specialise in non furry animals instead

Get yourself allergy meds and keep going! The world needs all the vets it can get. I hope you'll find a way to make it work :) good luck!

I feel your pain OP I'm allergic to everything in the rodent family and certain breed's of dogs but I don't have a dander allergy like most I have a protein allergy it's manageable with med's and washing any skin area of contact with fur, saliva, etc immediately and that'll usually stop any hives from forming good luck and go see a allergist 😊

Why do you want to be a vet tech if you’re allergic to some?
