They bloom starting in the south and move upward from there until about June. You can probably still catch them up north. Here in Tokyo they're long gone, though. As for the allergies, hay fever smacks people really hard here, which is the main reason you see everyone wearing masks. I suggest investing in a few yourself.

Mother Nature can be a bitch. She is never dependable. There is the always cheaper to visit cherry trees in Washington D.C. Just bring some allergy meds. Till then enjoy Japan it's more than sakura. (Although it was always my fav season while I lived there)

At least there's plenty of other stuff to do in Japan. Sure it sucks that you didn't get to see them, but you still have the chance to not make it a complete waste of a trip.
