Well, gravity is a theory. Scientific theories are different than layperson theories, they are predictive explanations of facts that can and have been tested and are found to be generally true and useful. Theory is pretty much as good as it gets in science, there's no higher level to go to. This confuses people, because there are also scientific things called laws, but laws are different than theories and are generally older, using outdated terminology.We don't really make scientific laws anymore. Whether the classmate knew this is beyond me, but depending upon what they were actually saying they might have been far more informed than you, OP.
