You expect your family to "get rid of him"? Charming. A clue: dogs recognise mostly based on smell. You don't smell like the abuser. Give him some time, show him some empathy, he will warm up to you. Abused animals need love, care and patience.

PLEASE report the breeederr! that is so not ok!
even if you don't have hard evidence, he will then be on the authorities' radar and if other dogs are similar it will raise red flags, and also other people might also come forward.
